Obligation of Learning
Why every Muslim must learn aqidah
Core Claim
Learning aqidah is an individual obligation on every Muslim
Why It Matters
Without knowing the basics of aqidah, one's faith cannot be sound and worship cannot be complete
Lesson
Aqidah is the foundation of religion and the pillar of faith. It refers to the matters which an accountable person must believe with firm certainty beyond all doubt — such as the existence of Allah, what is necessary for Him, what is impossible concerning Him, and what is possible in His regard. It also includes belief in the angels, revealed books, prophets, the Last Day, and divine decree.
The scholars of Islam have unanimously agreed that learning these matters is fard ayn — an individual obligation on every Muslim man and woman — meaning it is a personal duty that cannot be discharged on behalf of another. This is because Allah commanded knowledge before statement and action, saying in His noble book: 'Know that there is no god but Allah' (47:19). The command to know was placed first, before all other acts.
The knowledge required here is not the advanced knowledge of theologians and philosophers alone. It is the foundational knowledge that enables a Muslim to know what they believe and to distinguish truth from falsehood in core matters of their religion. One who does not know what is necessary to believe about Allah, or what is impossible concerning Him, is at risk in their faith — even if they perform the outward acts of worship.
Scholars have divided Islamic sciences into fard ayn (individual obligation) and fard kifaya (collective obligation). The collective obligation — such as deep tafsir scholarship or intricate legal analysis — is satisfied when some members of the community master it. But knowledge of aqidah fundamentals is never discharged on behalf of another. How can one worship a Lord they do not know?
Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (may Allah have mercy on him) states: 'The first obligation upon the accountable person is knowledge of Allah — what is necessary for Him and what is impossible concerning Him.' This means that faith is not mere blind following of one's ancestors but must contain at least a baseline of evidence and understanding.
Among the fruits of learning aqidah are: stability of faith when doubts arise, peace of heart, correctness of worship, and proper orientation toward Allah in supplication and trust. Learning aqidah is not a cold academic exercise — it is a journey toward knowing Allah and drawing close to Him with insight and awareness.
