Difference from Creation

Allah does not resemble any of His creation

Core Claim

Allah does not resemble any of His creation in any way whatsoever — whatever you imagine, Allah is not like that

Why It Matters

This attribute protects the Muslim from anthropomorphism — one of the most dangerous doctrinal deviations

Lesson

Difference from Creation (al-Mukhālafa li-l-ḥawādith) means Allah does not resemble any of His creation in any way whatsoever. Whatever you imagine, Allah is not like that.

Allah said: 'There is nothing like unto Him' (ash-Shura 42:11) — in Arabic grammar, an indefinite noun in a negative context conveys total generality, meaning: absolutely nothing at all is like Allah.

Saying of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): 'Inability to perceive [Him] is itself a [form of] perception, and searching into His essence is disbelief and shirk' — meaning your inability to picture Allah's reality is itself the correct realization. But attempting to picture Allah's essence is disbelief and shirk.

Two important points: 1. If you stop searching when you find nothing, that is true realization. Do not imagine Allah. 2. If you keep searching and imagine something, that is disbelief and shirk.

The world divides into: Bodies (dense like stone, and subtle like air, light, jinn, and angels) and attributes of bodies (moving or stationary). Allah is not any of these.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Reflect on everything, but do not reflect on the Essence of Allah' — meaning ponder Allah's creation and signs but do not try to picture His essence.

And Allah said: 'So do not strike comparisons for Allah' (an-Nahl 16:74) — do not make likenesses or parallels for Allah.

These are definitive matters of creed (qat'iyyat). Every Muslim must know them; ignorance is no excuse.
